5G stands for fifth generation wireless connectivity based on the IEEE 802.11ac standard of broadband technology, though an official standard is yet to be fixed. It comes with a lot of promises – better bandwidth, faster speed and lower latency that affects (positively) customers and businesses, as well.
Although it isn’t expected to roll out until 2020, a large number of companies have already started prepping up to adopt and incorporate 5G mobile connectivity into their business scopes and operations. As the biggest shift in technology is looming right ahead, business leaders around the world are leaving no stone unturned to fathom the rich impact of 5G on several next-gen techs, like self-driving cars and cloud computing.
Last year, at the 2017 CES in Las Vegas, tech bigwigs like Ericsson, Qualcomm and AT&T heavily hyped the next evolution of wireless technology. They bragged about initiating serious moves towards a better, successful 5G future, and CES 2018 is no different – Tech honchos from Baidu, Verizon and Qualcomm shared their critical insights and explained why high speed mobile wireless connectivity, machine learning and big data are the future face of tech trends.
Here are the 3 biggest takeaways from the panel discussion titled “Mobile Innovation: How 5G will Enable the Future”, a part of CES 2018 in Las Vegas – see, how the coming changes in connectivity technology will impact the society and businesses, alike:
5G adoption will happen in some time
Way back in 2014, the number of connected mobile devices outnumbered the total number of human beings on our planet earth. So, it’s needless to say, it won’t be a piece of cake to upgrade all those devices onto the 5G standard.
Hans Vestberg, CTO of Verizon discussed that the upgrade will take some time, and in the meantime, 5G will exist alongside 4G. While the formal standards of 5G got approved in December 2017, worldwide, a lot of work is still in the nascent stage, and needs to be done from the side of device manufacturers, carriers and cities. However, technologies like Gigabit LTE are strengthening the foundations of 5G, while reducing the gap between the generations – according to Cristiano Amon, President, Qualcomm.
Low latency is the strength of 5G
Yes, while majority of users craves for faster internet speeds, the real value of 5G is its low latency standard, which is around 1 ms. In this context, Amon said, the latency standard of 5G shows a 30x improvement than the present 4G latency, making cloud computing more useful. It will also make smartphones less expensive, along with unlocking a set of new computing capabilities.
For better performance, increased safety and improved mapping in autonomous vehicles, low latency is the key to look forward to.
5G will focus on better, stronger infrastructure and technologies
Big technology, bigger infrastructure – unlocking the ripe fruits of 5G success will require advanced technology and broader infrastructure base. To begin with, carriers will need to chalk out how they will be delivering their service.
Amon said, he expects the industry to shift towards millimeter wave technology and frequencies in the sub-6 GHz spectrum. Next, comes the question of customers, how they are going to get the technology perks. Fiber optic cables, antennas, chips and applications need to be procured to deliver 5G wireless solutions to the end-users.
